How often do we laugh? For most people, not nearly enough.
Yet laughter is one of the best things we can do.
If you are in pain, laughter produces endorphins that are stronger than morphine. Remember Norman Cousins with his incurable illness -- such excruciating pain that they couldn't even cover him with a sheet? But ten minutes of belly laughter while watching comedies gave him hours of relief -- totally pain-free.
If you want a closer bond, laughter produces a sense of joy that draws people together. You automatically like someone you laugh with. Laughter is one of the six languages of love, all of which produce oxytocin that bonds us with loving feelings to others.
If you are stressed out, remember the cockney east-end Londoners. During the blitz of 1941-2 when London was bombed night after night, they were renowned for their sense of humor. One video showed two wardens who had managed to herd people into the underground station to safety, but didn't manage to get in there themselves. Buildings were falling around them and one of them was lost. His friend keep calling for him. Finally, the rubble moved and the second warden emerged smiling, "Don't worry mate," he said, "I had all me fingers crossed" and he put his two hands in the air with all his fingers crossed over each other. And they laughed.
Nothing to laugh about? Stressed out, depressed, life is deadly serious? This means we need laughter even more! Watch the video clip below! I bookmark it and watch it on a regular basis and I always end up laughing.
Find any excuse to laugh, even to smile.

I have just finished reading Small Stories Big Changes by Lyle Estill. And there's an inspiring quote I want to share with you about imaginal cells -- that's you and me!
"When a caterpillar reaches a certain point in its life, it gets a voracious appetite.
It becomes over-consumptive. This triggers the formation of what biologists call imaginal cells. As the caterpillar eats and eats, these imaginal cells begin to vibrate at a different frequency than all the other cells. As the caterpillar makes its cocoon, (the imaginal cells) begin to find each other.
"Then, all the other cells in the caterpillar's body melt into what is called "nutritive soup." They actually UN-differentiate, from being heart cells or brain cells or stem cells, to create this nutritive soup.
"The imaginal cells then orchestrate the formation of a completely new being. A butterfly, completely unrecognizable from its earlier state of being.
"Our culture is in an over-consumtive state…one which we can't sustain. And amazingly enough, imaginal cells are beginning to appear. We are finding each other and gathering, and have the potential to orchestrate a whole new form of being." By Megan Toben: Pickards Mountain Eco Institute
Let's ask ourselves three caterpillar-butterfly questions
Are we simplifying our life -- moving beyond excess consumption? Where am I over-consuming in my life?
Are we interested in transformation -- in who we are? In our relationships? In our health? In our spiritual life? In our communities? Are we actively seeking something more? Are we going into action? Are our "Imaginal Cells" beginning to vibrate at a different frequency?
Do we feel we are in a nutritive soup -- things collapsing, feeling chaotic and even hopeless? Remember, Dr. Hans Jenny, early 1900s Swiss scientist, said that when you change the frequency that creates one geometric pattern, chaos results. Then out of the chaos a new pattern of greater order, harmony and complexity emerges. Are we trusting our process -- accepting, free of resistance?
Let's share what we want to simplify, what kind of transformation we are seeking and any problems we're having as we go through our "nutritive soup." We're here to help each other.
Dr. Richie experienced the WWII concentration camps first hand when he went into them with the allied forces.
One survivor he worked with was in good health, had lost little weight and worked seventeen hours a day helping with the liberation process. Dr. Richie thought the man must be a new arrival, but he had been in the camp for six years, experiencing the same starvation diet and trauma as everyone else.
What was his secret?
His attitude. Dr. Richie was shattered when the man told him that he had watched the Nazis shoot his wife and five children. In that moment the man realized he had only two choices: to hate or to love. If he hated, he would be no better than the people who had killed the ones he loved most in the world.
So he chose to love – to love everyone unconditionally: the Nazis and each person living in the near-death terror of the camp.
Science shows that attitude alone changes our health
Harvard University psychologist Ellen Langer studied eighty-four women who cleaned hotel rooms. Half the group were told to think of their work as exercise: changing linens for fifteen minutes burned 40 calories; vacuuming for fifteen minutes burned 50 calories; cleaning bathrooms for fifteen minutes burned 60 calories.
A month later the women who thought of their work as exercise had lowered their blood pressure by 10% and on average they lost .5% body fat and 2 Ibs in weight. The control group showed none of these improvements. The work was the same; attitude alone made the difference.
A positive attitude is a spiral up state of mind
